TJ Dawe Sells His Body for Charity

Posted in Announcements, Recommendations, Blogs, Patron's Pick at 3:50 pm by Ryan

Looks like TJ will be doing a special one-time-only show on Monday (Patron’s Pick Day) to directly benefit the Orlando Fringe Festival.

The Slip-Knot
Orange Venue in the Orlando Shakespeare Center
Monday, May 26th, Patron’s Pick Day
11:30AM
90 minute show

All proceeds go to Orlando Fringe!

This reminds me of something I read in a comment on Elizabeth Maupin’s blog recently. The question was “What’s Fab About the Fringe?”

I have been sitting on answer this question. One so seemingly simple. If I were asked this for an interview my answer would be -Everything. It is life to me.

But here- I will tell you a story…opening day from my end was more challenging than all my past 4yrs. of producing the festival or my previous 6 as an artist/producer within. The reasons are irrelevant. However, I was able to miraculously catch TJ Dawe’s show- Totem Figures which speaks in part directly about his life as a Fringe artist. It hit home hard.

At the end of his show (much needed for me to see at that very moment) I hugged him and said…”thanks for telling our story”. he replied( in true TJ fashion)…”thanks for giving me a place to tell it.”

At that moment…all my troubles went away :)

Blogging Fringe 2008

Posted in Ryan, Announcements, Requests, Blogs at 1:30 am by Ryan

My Friends,

As you all know, I’ve done this Blogging Fringe thing for the past two years. Sadly, this year looks like I’ll be pulled in more directions than ever before. I’ve been up until 2AM every night for weeks on end and I’m not sure when this will stop.

At the same time, I really love the opportunities the Fringe Festival presents to show off some great groups in Orlando and Internationally, and introduce the world to our potential.

At this point I have received dozens of press releases from faithful producers who would love a mention on the blog. I’d love to contact them, conduct interviews, post them to the site, get everyone excited and oh so much more, but that’s not going to happen.

Some of you have contributed time to this project before, others are simply friends, but you are all tied to the theatre community and you have proven your interest in making our community something special.

My plan for Blogging Fringe this year is to write a small number of posts on my personal blog and have them automatically re-posted to BloggingFringe.com, and I’m going to open that up to everyone in the world. All the content on the site will be release under a Creative Commons license, meaning anyone will be free to re-post and re-mix the work in any medium for non-commercial purposes This includes all archived content on the site as well.

Getting your content posted is simple. We’ll agree on a keyword, something like “bloggingfringe”, or “Orlando Fringe”, something you will only write on your blog if you’d like the content to be seen, and those posts will be re-posted with a link back to your blog. An example of this is on Liberatr.net where all the posts link to the original home instead of inside the site.

This project has never been about my own personal gain - I’ve sunk hundreds (thousands?) of dollars of my money into creating an environment for patrons and artists to have a conversation, but I believe I’ve fallen short of the mark up until now. Beth will be the first person to say that the Fringe website is not the place she’d like this conversation to happen - that’s one great thing about a site like ours.

All the editorial content on Blogging Fringe - the reviews, videos, audio podcasts, will no longer be called Blogging Fringe, but instead Ryan Price Media, Orlando Scene TV and Florida Creatives. These three websites will just be other first-class citizens of the community like anyone else in the world. If I end up being too busy to post many videos, podcasts or blogs, that will show, because they’ll be lost in the ocean of posts created by the blogging Fringe Faithful.

If I have to I’ll paint the administrator password to Blogging Fringe on a canvas and submit the artwork to Visual Fringe. That’s how open this should be. Anna, what’s the entry fee again?

More news on exactly how to get your blogs re-posted to a public, highly visible website for free coming soon. I hope the Fringe itself, the Orlando Weekly, Elizabeth Maupin, Orlando Arts Blog and others will be proud to include their blogs in the list, because the point is visibility, not exclusivity.

The contents of this email are posted here in order to make this information as public as I possibly can. If you’d like to contribute, you can start by posting a link to your blog in the comments! All serious submissions (and some not so serious) will be accepted.

321-441-3964
Any voicemails left here will be re-posted as comments unless otherwise noted.

Twitter your Fringe Festival in 2008

Posted in Announcements, Twitter at 8:46 pm by Ryan

Dear Fringe Freaks:

If you didn’t know, my Blogging Fringe site also has a presence on the chat / SMS / microblog thing that is Twitter:

www.twitter.com/bloggingfringe

What’s Twitter? The service asks the question: What are you doing right now? You answer the question by using your phone via SMS, or a website, or an instant message client (which might also be on your phone). Once you get the updates in, other people can choose to “follow” you. You can also re-post the updates to a widget on webpages, or you may see my updates in my facebook status message.

I only have one phone, so I tried to figure out how I could make a post about Fringe from my account and still have it show up on the bloggingfringe updates. I did figure it out, and I also decided to let all of my friends get the same ability.

Any updates you send to twitter containing the word ‘fringe’ or if you address a message to that account using @bloggingfringe will be re-posted. If this experiment doesn’t work out for everyone, I will take it down.

This is not implemented yet, but I think a neat addition to this would be if you started or ended your post with an exclamation point ! that might work well to include or exclude your message.

To get started, sign up for twitter and follow the bloggingfringe account:

www.twitter.com/bloggingfringe

…then include the word “fringe” or @bloggingfringe in your message.

Voci Dance moves to Winter Garden

Posted in Announcements, Quotes, Orlando Sentinel, Dance at 2:42 pm by Ryan

Heard this from a post on Maupin’s blog, why am I not on the Voci press release list?

Voci Dance, celebrating its 8th season as Central Florida’s premier modern dance company announces their move to Winter Garden, Florida. Beginning in February 2008, the company will make The Centre for Dance & the Performing Arts their new rehearsal space. The studio, owned by dance educator Kathryn Austin is located at West Plant Street in the heart of Winter Garden just 15 minutes west of downtown Orlando.

Located across the street from the studio is the newly renovated Garden Theatre where Voci will perform at the grand opening Garden Theatre Gala celebration February 29. Voci Dance is also the first dance company slated to perform at the theater in November 2008.

For the past year, Voci Dance has rehearsed in downtown Orlando at the historic Avalon Island building managed by Artists Registry. Fortunately for the company, Kathryn Austin’s donation of space came at the same time the company learned their lease would not be renewed at Avalon Island. Voci’s Executive Director, Kelli Cummins explained, “As a small non-profit we depend upon people in our community to help us achieve our mission of making the arts accessible. Kathryn Austin has graciously provided us with the space we need in order to achieve that mission.”

Voci Dance was founded in 2000 and became a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization in 2003. The company receives a small amount of funding from United Arts of Central Florida and is also contracted through United Arts and Orange County Public Schools to provide dance education services targeting Title I schools. To learn more about Voci Dance please visit www.vocidance.org or myspace.com/vocidance. To learn more about The Centre for Dance & the Performing Arts, please visit www.dancecdpa.com.

Downtown Orlando is hemorrhaging art, and lots of arts groups are not able to settle in downtown because the city is too busy trying to be like every other city, but they’re not trying to be themselves. Also, I have never had great feelings about Jeff over at the Rogers Building/DMAC - funny thing - as soon as we brought an expensive video camera into his gallery, he was much more eager to speak with us than on any previous meetings. That’s not how we roll at Blogging Fringe or any Liberatr channels. You should pay us some mind (if any) when we bring a point-and-shoot and tell you hundreds of people will see this in the morning as when we borrow the camera from my brother’s company. Please!

…and buttons, and inspire the rest of the visuals for the 2008 festival. Last year’s protest signs started out sucking, but ended up getting close to a viral user-generated fun thing, so PUSH did one thing right last year.

Orlando Puppet Festival Schedule

Posted in Ryan, Puppets, Events, Announcements, Recommendations at 3:56 pm by Ryan

Orlando Puppet Festival 2007 Calendar
Downloadable PDF

This weekend, for the third year in a row now, I will say to my fellow Fringe Fanatics “You MUST check out the Orlando Puppet Festival“. This event is not for kids (there are some family-friendly shows), but intends to expose Orlando to high-art, cutting-edge expressive puppetry. I’ve seen dozens of different types of acts, some including human actors, others with minimalist puppets, and even puppets singing cabaret.

Headlining this year’s festival are Pennsylvania’s Cashore Marionettes with “Life in Motion” and “Simple Gifts”, and Vermont’s Sandglass Theatre with “Autumn Portraits” and “Isidor’s Cheek”. If you didn’t know this, New England has a thriving puppetry community, including a school in Connecticut with great puppetry programs. We have some of our own here in the South, most notably Atlanta, which is home to the Center for Puppetry Arts.

Another highlight of the festival is Friday night’s “late night” show, “Puppets from the Edge”, NOT to be missed. This is a bit of an open-mic night for puppets, with everyone from local artists to far-off visitors showing off shorter and more experimental pieces. I have some great video of last year’s event if I can ever get some time to edit it down.

Orlando Puppet FestivalA similar type of show is the screening of “Handmade Puppet Dreams” a shorts program of puppet films collected by Heather Henson, which has toured all over the world, from India to California and everywhere in between. Don’t miss the current show at the Gallery of Avalon Island (DMAC), which features puppets from the HMPD films.

Just two more events to plug: check out a live outdoor performance of Heather’s original piece, “Panther and Crane”, inspired by her life in Florida, 8PM Sunday at Hertiage Park in front of the History Center. This play also features our sweethearts Voci Dance. Finally, there will be an OPF wrap party at the Harp and Celt, the downtown bar and restaurant just two doors down from the Mad Cow.

Props to Jamie Donmoyer and Heather for making this great festival even better this year. Multiple venues, family-friendly events (check out the Cupcake Shows), outdoors, films, parties, and of course, some of the most amazing puppetry you will ever see in this town. Order your tickets in advance and get more information by visiting OrlandoPuppetFestival.com, and I hope to see you all there!

October 26, 27, 28 @ Mad Cow Theatre and 3 other venues closeby.

2008 Fringe applications now Online

Posted in General Fringe Info, Ryan, Announcements, Requests at 1:23 am by Ryan

The all-new OrlandoFringe.org website has a link to the 2008 Fringe artist application. I am helping out with some programming and implementation of the site this year, and I’m very honored to be able to help out.

I was thinking about doing a Blogging Fringe show (or something in a similar vein) but then I saw that you can get 7 shows at the outdoor stage for less money than I paid to rent a vendor space last year - I’m so taking that option. Expect to see 7 Blogging Fringe shows, all videotaped, all including interviews with patrons and artists, all including songs and dances (maybe). Who knows what we’ll be doing? All I know is I’ll have to apply later, because I’m broke.

If I could bind myself to doing 7 events during Fringe this year, then maybe I can prove my ability to do 7 shows next year, or perhaps an outdoor event will always be our deal from now on.

What would you like to see at a Blogging Fringe show outdoors?

Orlando’s Performing Arts Center Approved

Posted in Ryan, Announcements, Sentinel, Recaps, Orlando Sentinel, Orlando Weekly, Newspaper, Blogs at 6:35 pm by Ryan

That’s right. Thursday night, July 26th, 2007 the Orange County Commission met and voted on the building of a new sports arena (for the Orlando Magic, the old one is to be sold and demolished), some renovations on the 70+ year old Citrus Bowl (home of the Capital One Bowl, the Champs Sports Bowl, and… not much else), and of most importance to you, the Dr. Phillips Performing Arts Center (see if you can get us to stop calling it OPAC any time soon).

“Betsy” Maupin has a bit of news about the PAC in her latest blog. John Kennedy (political blogger for the Sentinel) was giving semi-live updates during the meeting, and my new favorite news aggregator for Orlando, Outside.in, doesn’t have much news at all.

The best coverage of “the venues” by far has been the Orlando Weekly. Searching their site for “Pleasure Dome” or “Venues” will bring up lots of relevant results (including the several reasons why they were not interested in building a new arena or renovating the Citrus Bowl. The Orlando Weekly Blog has also been getting much more frequent updating lately, so if you’re into reading blogs, check out their RSS.

Lotsa lotsa things going on lately - changes going on at the Liberatr.net / Blogging Fringe / OrlandoScene.TV / Florida Creatives offices (my desk). Still, I can’t NOT announce this.

Theatre downtown is giving some of the best Fringe shows a chance to do an encore - not all of them, not all the patron’s picks, just whoever they asked or whoever agreed to do it - plenty of shows have other performances, like VarieTEASE at Parliament House. Anyway, lots of our Fringe favorites will be playing in early August, just a scant block away from Loch Haven Park.

Here’s the schedule:

Hi, We’re Blogging Fringe, and We Know Our Sh*t

Posted in Emily, Announcements, Recommendations at 4:01 am by Emily

It seems the last time we wrote a sparkling review of a then somewhat lesser known artist at Fringe, he won Patron’s Pick. (And he used our quote on his promotional materials, which drove our stock up!) I took a certain sense of pride in knowing that we had picked ourselves a winner. For me, I think when the critical voice meets the things that move people, you have truly great art. Mark Baratelli did that last year, and we congratulate him again this year for winning the Blue Venue Patron’s Pick this year, in a very tough field!

However, we wrote another sparkling review of a show that did not receive such a sparkling review in another publication. May have caused controversy, and yes, I believe that everyone is entitled to their opinion. When I have deep discussions over art and criticism with my mother, she usually says to me, “That’s why they make chocolate and vanilla ice cream.” What one person loves is not for everyone. And any good critic knows that – every good critic, actually. And while I will defend critics and the critique of even shows at a non-juried event like Fringe to the end, it’s nice to say that you can pick a winner.

So we here at Blogging Fringe want to send a special congratulations to the outstanding team behind the Red Venue Patron’s Pick – Calculus: the Musical! What started out as a series of mnemonic devices to remember tricky formulas (I’m really having a Pete and Pete flashback now!) has taken this year’s Fringe by storm, with three sell-out dates and an extremely successful run. Not only that, but Sadie and Marc of Matheatre are two of the nicest people I’ve ever met, and so I just want to extend a special congratulations. We are proud of all of the Patron’s Picks winners, but every blog has to have a darling, I guess.

Hooray for Little Isaac!

Calculus: the Musical! will be playing in the Red Venue at 11am on Monday, May 28th.

Quick update on the Fabbys!

Posted in General Fringe Info, Ryan, Announcements, Recaps, Fringe Crush at 3:11 am by Ryan

I realise now - I should have left this on the Blogging Fringe Voicemail Review Hotline. Too late now, I guess, but here’s the news:

We were honored with a Fabby Award for “Fringe of the Fringe”!
Fringe of the Fringe Award

There are lots more things that went on, including LOTS more videos (and a couple that will never see the light of day…), but those will have to wait until tomorrow! Blogging Fringe is not over! We still have so many shows to try and properly review, so many photos to share, videos to upload, and really try to get things a tiny bit more organized, too. Stay with us for at least another week.

International shows, we’d love to hear how the circuit is going, and I think all your new friends would too, so keep blogging and giving us something to blog about - send in photos, stories, crushes, whatever! Help make Blogging Fringe an international affair!

If you’re in Orlando, please subscribe, and check out some of the Liberatr.net links on the right. Sadly, I had a few of these sites break because of server problems during Fringe and I haven’t been home to fix them. Very very soon, everything around here should be more or less back to normal. Thanks again everyone for a Fabulous Fringe!

Biting the Bullet - I’m just one of Y’all

Posted in Ryan, Announcements at 3:13 am by Ryan

OK, so I realised some time today that I alone cannot make all the videos, take all the pictures, do all the blog posts I want to do AND update the MySpace AND write reviews - I think I have 4 or more reviews I want to do, and they might never get the level of attention I think they deserve.

It’s official - if I ask people to write reviews in comments, so should I. If I ask people to leave reviews on the voicemail (321-441-3964), so should I. If I want people to leave reviews on video, so should I and so should all the bloggers. Then we can just blog and be a patron, because we are patrons first - those are the rules. I’ll never sit at my tent instead of go to shows. I’ll never make buttons instead of talk to other patrons. I’ll never make a video instead of just have a conversation with someone. Being a geek comes second. I’m here because I love this, please remember that.

I want people to feel like my opinion is no more important than that of someone in line. That’s why we have the voicemail and the Twitter account. To level the playing field. You get exactly 140 characters to say what you think - if it doesn’t fit, tought luck, baby! The problem with Twitter is, you need to make an account. Who wants to do that? The phone thing is much easier. So call.

Now I admit that because I know how to make videos and I have the equipment and the ambition, this qualifies me for things like that, and sure I know about podcasting and getting my stuff on iTunes as well, so I’ll do that too. Still, this site will never be all it can be until we have a flood of your thoughts and posts. Please help everyone who comes to the site by commenting, calling, sharing and reading.

Fringe Programs (changes)

Posted in General Fringe Info, Ryan, Announcements at 11:26 am by Ryan

With less than a week until the festival, you can now pick up programs all around Orlando - I’ve got one from Stardust. In a seemingly typical fashion, there are errors in the program. They’re correct on the Fringe Website and our individual shows pages, so don’t worry if you’re looking online, but make sure you double check if your show has dancing canvases, Marlon Brando, or dance/film mash-ups. CineDance only has three shows to begin with, so you don’t want to miss one because of a misprint. Here’s a message from Beth Marshall about programs:

Fringe Programs

Should you wish to get a hard copy Fringe program, you may do so at one of the following places starting now and all throughout Fringe:

The Orlando Repertory Theatre
The Orlando-UCF Shakespeare Festival
The Fringe office
SAK
Pom Pom’s TeaHouse
The Closing Agent
The Parliament House
StarDust Coffee/Video
Dandelion Café
Austin’s Coffee House
Urban Think
EO INN
Comfort Suites on Magnolia

Fringe Program Changes (!!!)

Please note the following changes in the program:

Page 9: Too Much Religion Inc.: A Love Lost Life
“Film legend, Marlon Brando reflects on his life as an icon. Scattered between his recollections are true events leading up to his greatest performance, testifying at his son’s murder trial.”
5/19 - 2:45 PM should be 5/20 - 2:45 PM

Page 14: DRIP paint in motion
“The dancers paint and the paint dances. Music by Tod Kimbro.”
5/19 - 6:00 PM should be 5/18 - 10:55 PM

Page 19: CineDance Jazz Dance: LIVE FEED
“Film and dance collide as this company explodes onto stage!
“Eloquent, athletic, dynamic dancer; classicism, jazz, gestural expressivity and a little funk.” - Diane Burns, Orlando Sentinel”
5/18 - 8:40 PM should be 5/19 - 8:40 PM

Page numbers refer to the page numbers in the hard copy program.

Free Tickets: Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner

Posted in Ryan, Announcements at 10:48 am by Ryan

I have heard of discounts for performing special feats, like Linwood Sassy’s Screw You Review offering a discount to any one wearing an official Linwood Sassy t-shirt, but recently a show about a girl in love with an Orka sent me this tidbit:

2007: Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner has set aside two comp tickets for each performance for winners of our Love Story essay contest. Just write about a true love story that has ended well, 250 words or less, email to < ClarionRefugees AT aol DOT com > with your first and second preference for show times. Winners will be notified two days before the show they win.

I would assume they are going to use your essay during the show somehow… they didn’t really say. I’m curious as to how this will turn out - get to writing those essays!

Send us links to reviews!

Posted in Ryan, Announcements at 12:18 am by Ryan

Hey everyone, I’d like to bring to your attention Blogging Fringe’s coverage of individual shows - we are working hard to post links to websites, at least one photo, a decent amount of text and showtimes (still in progress, I think there are 6 of these up now). As I said before, if you find anything missing (or you’d like us to add/change something) please email < info AT bloggingfringe DOT com >. If you sent us a press release over email, we have made an effort to include this information on the site.

One thing I’d like to do to flesh out these pages is to include links to your past press, preferably for the show, but also for your company or perhaps writers/directors/leads. This is purely for an audience to gain more perspective. A major goal of our website is to use the web more effectively than the guys down the street (paper, TV, radio).

That’s all! Send us web links to reviews - they can be web videos, blogs, newspapers, TV appearances, podcasts, whatever! If it is a short (one to three paragraph) review that doesn’t exist on the web, we can copy and paste it from email.

Once again, < info AT bloggingfringe DOT com > is the email you need for us.
