Why is May such a great month for holding events? Sure, for our Northern friends, it means the end of bad weather, the opening of roller coaster parks, and a change in the scenery as the trees and flowers start to show their summer colors, but here in Florida, it’s more like the start of the summer’s hot, humid, rainy monotony, the arrival of the tourists, time-share owners, kids on summer vacation, religious zealots protesting Gay Days, and of course, bad drivers in rental cars.
The main reason I look forward to May every year is the arrival of the Orlando International Fringe Theatre Festival (Thursday the 15th through Monday the 26th). Every year, theatre companies, dancers, comedians, clowns, musicians, improv actors, writer/directors, solo acts and large ensembles, exuberant teenagers and road-hardened veterans alike grace Loch Haven Park with their creativity and energy, and Orlando gives every ounce of it (and more) back to them as many of the national and international acts begin their Canadian Fringe circuit, which brings them to a new city every two weeks. Show prices range from free (as in free software) to $10, and all shows require the one-time purchase of a $6 festival button - 100% of your ticket money goes to the artist. This is one of the only unjuried, uncensored events I know of in Orlando outside of a few open-mic nights, and even some of those are passing judgment on the performers (the other best example here is BarCamp).
18 months ago, I started gathering a group of my friends together every third Monday of the month for an event called Florida Creatives Happy Hour (Monday the 19th, 6PM @ Loch Haven Park). Now, those original 8 friends are hardly in the same room, but the group has grown to something resembling a small political party representing the creative professionals and hobbyists here in Central Florida (with a group getting started in Jacksonville as I write this). This month’s Florida Creatives falls during the Fringe Festival, so at 6PM on the 19th we will be descending upon their “Green Lawn of Fabulousness” to have a beer and some soul food and socialize. At 7:45, we will be attending American Squatter, starring Barry Smith, the creator of last year’s sell-out hit Jesus in Montana. Tickets are $10 plus your $6 Fringe button.
Despite the fact that Fringe starts on the same day every year, another festival seems to think they are better than the Fringe, by starting on the exact same day. Yes, the Florida Music Festival runs Thursday the 15th through Sunday the 18th this year, at pretty much every available venue downtown. In past years, you’ve been able to buy a one-time pass that gets you in to all the shows for the whole weekend, as well as nightly passes - buying a ticket to just one show will hardly do such an event justice. The festival also has a short film as well as an art contest, check these out too if you can find the time in between all of the other events happening at the exact same time.
What other events? How about that bizarre craft bazaar held semi-bi-anually at Stardust Video & Coffee, Grandma Party? (Saturday the 17th, 10AM to Sunset) For some reason they opted out of celebrating Earth Day in favor of overlapping with FMF and Fringe this year - the reason why is left as homework for the reader. Actually, if you find out, please try to explain this one to me too. At G-ma Party, you’ll not only find loads of handmade goods, like the cereal-and-eggs inspired work of the Breakfast Bunch, but trendy t-shirts, buckets of buttons, live music by some of Orlando’s best local bands (at least those who are friends with the festival organizers), a bal-looney community pool, and of course rummage piles and raffles.
Not as culturally significant, but still worth a mention, the second ever Florida Drupal User Group meeting will be held at the offices of MindComet in Maitland this Saturday (May 17th, 1PM). Check out the event and any follow-up at groups.drupal.org/florida.
Still more to come in this round-up of events, because I couldn’t write such a blog post without mentioning the Corazon Art and Music Festival being held at the Orlando Brewing Company (Sunday the 18th, starts 1PM, All Day). As I’m writing this I don’t have access to any listings, but I know tickets are $5, and I can give a serious recommendation, as this event is being thrown by Robert and Jonathan from Gamble Records, the folks who brought us the ELLA Music Festival in October. I expect you will see lots of singer-songwriter type acts, and you can trust Robert Johnson’s rolodex to bring you some great music (and art?).
There must be more happening during the next two weeks, but isn’t that enough? Of course, we can’t forget about this Friday (May 16th, 8AM-11AM) and the Likemind Orlando coffee meetup at the Lake Eola Panera Bread. This month there will be free coffee and hopefully a few free copies of a book called Murketing - I don’t have a lot of details about it, but I know the publishers of the book are sponsoring the coffee and snacks all over the US, so they get serious props.
If I’m missing anything here, please leave a shout-out, and I’ll try to include it in the next bulletin. Until next time, have a great May!
…and buttons, and inspire the rest of the visuals for the 2008 festival. Last year’s protest signs started out sucking, but ended up getting close to a viral user-generated fun thing, so PUSH did one thing right last year.

The all-new OrlandoFringe.org website has a link to the 2008 Fringe artist application. I am helping out with some programming and implementation of the site this year, and I’m very honored to be able to help out.
I was thinking about doing a Blogging Fringe show (or something in a similar vein) but then I saw that you can get 7 shows at the outdoor stage for less money than I paid to rent a vendor space last year - I’m so taking that option. Expect to see 7 Blogging Fringe shows, all videotaped, all including interviews with patrons and artists, all including songs and dances (maybe). Who knows what we’ll be doing? All I know is I’ll have to apply later, because I’m broke.
If I could bind myself to doing 7 events during Fringe this year, then maybe I can prove my ability to do 7 shows next year, or perhaps an outdoor event will always be our deal from now on.
What would you like to see at a Blogging Fringe show outdoors?
In Edinburgh, venuemanagers choose their plays. Professional work, which deserves a wider audience, debuts at the festival. Producers and talent scouts swarm the city, expecting andenjoying a certain level of quality.By contrast, the lottery system that has sustained and nurtured festivals throughoutNorth America contains a flaw that will always curtail growth. Truly challenging andtruly brave theatrical art drowns in a sea of amateurism. Edmonton’s most talentedwriters, directors and performers launched their careers at the festival, using it asan opportunity to learn and grow, but it’s hardly a destination for the country’s — oreven the city’s — best players. Some nights, sitting with two other people in Acacia Hall, as an accountant stumbles through a series of cliches about his cat, thedarkness of divorce and globalism, the Brave Fringer can’t help but wonder:
Shouldn’t I be watching a real play, or sleeping in my bed?
Surely Mayne and his colleagues know this, but the Fringe needs better plays, notbetter access to tickets, for a genuine breakthrough. And the only way to ensurequality is to circumvent the lottery system, partially at first, with juried venues.
So, I know Montreal Fringe is going on right now (June 7th - 17th), but I’m a poor blogger living in Orlando, so what do I do? Ask for help!
If you’re in the second largest city in Canada and you have an internet connection, a camera, a mobile phone, or even a landline (1-321-441-3964), BloggingFringe.com will proudly play host to your content. If you have a video, we can suggest a way for you to make a small handful of change from making said video. If you just want to be our MySpace friend, you can do that too!
Well it’s 2 days after the Fringe and I’ve just uploaded the last of my Fringe crush videos. What? believe it or not it takes about 15 mins for each 1 minute video. Till next year- I crush on you all!
And just for fun, you can see all 39 Fringe Crushes! Posted there for your crushing pleasure! Enjoy! And please stop by P-sha Production’s YouTube and comment on your favorite Fringe crush!
Congratulations to Corene Fry (Pet Fringe) and Rozz Grigsby (Kids Fringe)!!! Great job ladies! This was in my opinion the best yet. And I hear from Corene she’s hoping to grow the Pet Fringe even more next year! You couldn’t help but stop and watch the kids having a blast. I know I wanted to jump in the bounce house. Hey ladies how about an adult bounce house? And Corene I’m keeping my fins crossed for that dolphin show
Again Awesome job!
I realise now - I should have left this on the Blogging Fringe Voicemail Review Hotline. Too late now, I guess, but here’s the news:
We were honored with a Fabby Award for “Fringe of the Fringe”!
There are lots more things that went on, including LOTS more videos (and a couple that will never see the light of day…), but those will have to wait until tomorrow! Blogging Fringe is not over! We still have so many shows to try and properly review, so many photos to share, videos to upload, and really try to get things a tiny bit more organized, too. Stay with us for at least another week.
International shows, we’d love to hear how the circuit is going, and I think all your new friends would too, so keep blogging and giving us something to blog about - send in photos, stories, crushes, whatever! Help make Blogging Fringe an international affair!
If you’re in Orlando, please subscribe, and check out some of the Liberatr.net links on the right. Sadly, I had a few of these sites break because of server problems during Fringe and I haven’t been home to fix them. Very very soon, everything around here should be more or less back to normal. Thanks again everyone for a Fabulous Fringe!
You asked for it, you got it… MORE FRING CRUSHES!!!!! I’ve put them all on a player! Keep checking back so you don’t miss a one… who knows could be you that gets Fringe crushed!
Day 5 aka Tuesday is a repeat day of Monday, you know the kind, it just seems the amse but different. I find myself in place to break my personal record of 32 Fringe year with 19 shows seen before the half way point, which is today!
My 5 started at one of those shows that is near and dear to my heart (and maybe on day to my wallet) Mark Baratelli’s Improv Cabaret in the blue venue. I am very lucky to have seen this show grow since it’s conception last year. Mark almost never stops making me laugh! I laughed so hard I cried. If you missed it last year, don’t miss it this year!
I stayed in the blue venue for the next 2 shows. The White Guy and Born to Be Asian both shows on ethnicity both in the blue…. Coincidence?? Who knows.
The White Guy is one of two show from Pocketchange (Out of Pocket is their other) at the Fringe. It’s a one mans story of his “white” life. Mark is a great story teller and I found it charming knowing that this based on his real life. Now I just want to see a picture of his baby! Born to be Asian is a ensemble show all about.. you guessed it being Asian. The 365 gang stopped by for a little preshow, all tied together with a nice message at the end.
Across the Green to the purple venue (aka Trish’s house) for Bat Boy: the Musical. What a huge production. I think they might have the most cast members in their show out of the entire Fringe. The Winter Springs Performing Arts, a new arts group, brings the big show to the Fringe. Another fun fact- all of the musical sound you hear in the show was created by a cast members. Wow!
And last but not least… back across the green to the pink venue to see Gemma Wilcox in The Honeymoon is Officially Over. Amazing! I loved all the specificity of all of the characters. I especially like the personification of the animals in her story. Last nights audience was full of Fringe performers which was really cool. A good time was had by all!
Check out the tattoo Queen of influx Dance (Rye) at work even when seeing a show! Now that’s dedication
As of Day 4 of the 16th Annual Orlando International Fringe Theatre Festival, the Visual Fringe (the kind you hang on the wall) had sold 7 pieces, more than half of last year’s total. With 8 days remaining in the festival, things are looking good. Visual Fringe curator Anna McCambridge tells us about the show and a few notable pieces.
We should have continuing coverage throughout the week. Subscribe to our audio and video posts via iTunes, and keep checking Blogging Fringe for reviews, patron voicemails (321-441-3964) and more.
P.S. Clicking on the ad at the end of the video or making buttons and badges this week helps pay for our tent out on the green! We appreciate the support.
This Fringe Festival kicks off this week on Thursday night from 6 to 9 when the Fringe has the opening night party - people will be dressed as hippies with protest buttons and signs. There will be live performances and drinking and good times. I think there are a few official shows that day as well. Friday is the real start of the festival with a few night shows and then HOLY CRAP, two long days of shows and button making at the tent (I did mention the tent, right?), not to mention Pet’s Fringe and Kid’s Fringe, and the unveiling of the 9th venue.
I am just about finished with the 78/79 shows pages on the shows page - some of the links don’t work yet, but there are 26 of these with podcasts attached and about 5 with videos - all have pictures and some text I copied from emails, press releases, myspace pages or websites. One very cool thing is the fact that any show with an official blog has their posts right there on their show page so you can keep up to date just that much faster. Last but not least, you can leave comments on individual shows, especially cool for the shows that don’t have web sites or the ability for comments.
I’d like to do an OrlandoScene.TV video for this week - If you know anyone that does video editing or owns a digital video camera - I’d love to get in touch with them to find out if they can come out to the festival and do some taping/editing. The video will likely go up on Revver and MySpace and the podcast site. Whoever does it will get credit and links galore, and this is not a one-time offer, I’m always looking for good video people.
So much more to say, but work is calling me back. See you this weekend!
Yes folks, you can stat your support of blogging at Fringe with no strings attached. You can delete the link at the bottom for all I care.
During the festival you will be able to make a 2″ button with your own message on it - this is one of 9 templates that will be available at the Blogging Fringe/Florida Creatives tent in the Fringe Biergarten (I mean out by the beer tent). Come bring your donations for Blogging Fringe on opening weekend and wear a button with your message on it all week long!
With less than a week until the festival, you can now pick up programs all around Orlando - I’ve got one from Stardust. In a seemingly typical fashion, there are errors in the program. They’re correct on the Fringe Website and our individual shows pages, so don’t worry if you’re looking online, but make sure you double check if your show has dancing canvases, Marlon Brando, or dance/film mash-ups. CineDance only has three shows to begin with, so you don’t want to miss one because of a misprint. Here’s a message from Beth Marshall about programs:

This meme is traveling around MySpace, so I thought I’d release it to the rest of the web. Written by Beth Marshall, it is a list of guidelines for experiencing the Orlando Fringe.
Here is a basic FRINGE 101 guide of FAQ’s to help aid you in having a positive FRINGE experience. Please pass this email along to all your friends. Post it on your blogs, newsletters, websites or wherever you want.

The Orlando International Fringe Festival’s Producing Artistic Director Returns To Teach Yapinars at The Harriett Lake Festival of New Plays-PlayFest
Have you ever wanted to produce a Fringe show but did not know where to start? How about that time you put on a Fringe show and no one showed?
Beth Marshall, the producing artistic director for the Orlando International Fringe Festival has all the answers you need and is returning for the second year in a row to teach two Yapinars on everything you need to know before you begin to plan your next Fringe production at this year’s Master Classes during The Harriett Lake Festival of New Plays- PlayFest.
The first Yapinar, “How to Produce A Fringe Show 101,” taking place Sunday, February 25, is the perfect class for first time Fringers, anyone interested in independently producing a show and even veterans who wish to brush up on their producing skills. Everything from sponsorship to marketing ideas will be discussed, as well as how to get into The Fringe “loop” and how to get your Fringe show off and running.
Now that you know the basics, you need to know how to take your Fringe show on the road. The second Yapinar, “How to Tour Your Fringe Show 102,” taking place Sunday, March 4, teaches everything one needs to know about touring with different Fringe Festivals across the globe. Also discussed will be the various models of Fringes and as well as budgeting your show to go on the road.
“Due to the ever-growing popularity of the Orlando International Fringe Festival, we receive hundreds of inquiries asking how to participate in the festival each year,” said Marshall. “These Yapinars are a fun and informative way to not only provide artists with valuable information they need about Fringe, but they also help to continue to increase participation and attendance for Orlando Fringe. The Yapinars focus on individual shows that people bring to the table as well as a general overview of Fringe as a whole.”
Both classes will be held at the Orlando-UCF Shakespeare Festival’s Lowndes Room from 10 a.m.- noon. The cost to attend each class is $10 and a $5 PlayFest button is required for attendance.
In addition to teaching the Yapinars, Marshall is also producing and hosting Play-In-A-Day for The Harriett Lake Festival of New Plays-PlayFest. Play-In-A-Day is a fun opportunity where participating organizations nominate one actor, actress, writer and director to produce a ten-minute play in twenty-four hours.
On Sunday, February 25, each participating group will be given the same surprise topic. The writers have until 7 a.m. the next day to get the script complete, the director has a few hours to look over the script and the actors have a few hours to memorize and rehearse.
The plays are then performed on Monday, February 26 at 7 p.m. in the Orlando-UCF Shakespeare Festival’s Margeson Theatre. Participants for team Fringe include writer David Lee, director Chad Lewis, actor Rob Ward and actress Clare Gezzy.
Tickets are on sale now for both the Yapinars and Play-In-A-Day by calling the Orlando-UCF Shakespeare Festival’s at 407-447-1700 x 1.

If you haven’t seen it on MySpace, check out this entertaining video by Mark Baratelli asking patrons to house out-of-town performers. Beth Marshall will give you a Fringe Superpass if you do!
Do you know any other festivals that give free tickets for services like this? Tell us about them - leave a comment.
Orlando Fringe Seeks Billets for Festival: Give an artist a temporary home With the increase of national and international artists coming to our 2007 Fringe, we are faced with the need to have more hosts that offer up rooms, beds, couches, air mattresses etc… than ever before. This is a good problem for Fringe to have, but we need your help! So, if you have the space in your home and the desire to house an artist, or two, or three or more, please let me know asap. For your hospitality, Fringe offers a Superpass to the 2007 Festival and of course your billeting is tax deductible. This is a truly rewarding and fun experience. I have personally hosted for the past 7 years and am still in contact with all my billets. I do all the pairings for this as well and do a good job of matching host and artist to be a right fit. Thank you for your consideration of this and feel free to pass this along to anyone that might be a potential host.
Remember that weird ad PUSH Interactive showed off last year, with an intern standing on the street corner holding a sign? Apparently that is the genius plan by the Webby-award-winning group… to take pictures of people holding signs. On Monday February 12th down at Loch Haven Park, they’re having a photo shoot, and you’re to bring a sign, and it can say just about anything (as long as you’re cool with them printing it on a poster. Beth Marshall made a genius comment about this genius plan:
Use this opportunity to promote yourself and your Fringe show! [google-eyed-smiley-dude]
Hooray crowdsourcing? I’ll believe it’s a good idea when I see it for myself.
Speaking of crowd resources, Fringe is looking for people to “Billet” performers. Think Revolutionary War and the British government requires that you put up a soldier in your house as the army moves through your town. There are perks, however, and those perks are a free Superpass to the Fringe. Sounds pretty sweet, but I wonder what the obligation would entail… I guess if you lived close to town it would be easy. Still, with the number of national and international acts much higher this year, performers being able to find cheap (as in free) places to stay will be a task.
A similar post brings up quartering again, as well as asking for raffle items, office supplies and straight up money. I imagine it takes some dollars to put on a show like this and keep people focused on it almost 24/7/365. Help out if you can.
