Interview with Gabi Lorino - Podcast

The talkback you never get at the festival!

this is totally going on my podcast! Blogging Fringe podcast started almost 10 years ago when a kid with a microphone wanted to see the Fringe have more of an online presence, and he dragged the artists and patrons kicking and screaming. Then YouTube, Facebook and Twitter exploded and the reviewers, artists, patrons and freaks were all getting online! Now after a 5 year hiatus, Ryan is going back to the roots and interviewing touring artists who are passing through Orlando on their way to Canada, Edinburgh, Australia and the rest of the globe. After running into Gabi Lorino at OENS on Sunday, I asked her if she would record a podcast with me. After her Tuesday night show, we sat in the parking lot (if you can't tell) and recorded the interview. We talk about the show, Gabi's book, Fringe past, present and future, and dating, which is the subject of the show.

As for the show itself, anyone who has seen it will tell you as well as I can that you are not in for a life-changing thearical experience when you enter the Blue Venue. One of the most enjoyable parts of the show for me was being able to relate to certain parts of each of the 4 characters, all played by Lorino, and the rap session at the end where the audience got to share their own bridesmaid stories. It was nice that Gabi had free copies of her book available for attendees: I know I will be reading it for research purposes in order to further my attempts at understanding women.

Wow, that was a really

Wow, that was a really in-depth interview. "Desperate Authors" sounds like it could be good if done right. Oh, and about the last thing Gabi said, that her character says in the play, "Don't try to find love on the internet. It's just a terrible, terrible idea," that's contradictory to the great notices coming out from the Purple Venue's "Real Time."

Optional Scene 10 has been

Optional Scene 10 has been great. It's the part of the show that is different each time. So far we've had suggestions about what to do with bridesmaid gowns (such as donate them to the Cinderella Project or give them to kids for their dress-up fun), heard comments from a "Male Bridesmaid," (that would be you, Ryan), and I even had to put on the bride crown once and answer some questions about Tara the Bride. (She is 32, her man is 27, and he is in grad school to become a pharmacist.)

Keep in mind that this is a narrative, and your socks will not be blown off by my acting. They will remain comfortably on your feet throughout the show. I've had an internal debate going all my life- am I a writer or actor? introvert or extrovert? and all I can really say to answer those questions is that I am as much of all of those things as I can be. I was a writer and introvert first, so perhaps my Fringe shows have been part of a transition.

Readers, fellow bloggers, and whoever else is out there reading this, I hope you enjoy Fringe and see some fantastic shows! They are definitely out there!!

Gabi
